Acne Treatment in Details
Acne affects everybody at some point in their teen or adult lives. For some, the acne is mild and does not last for a long period of time, but for others, the acne can be severe and long lasting. Sometime acne can lead to severe and permanent scarring. Acne is created when the oil glands, called sebaceous glands become blocked. Trapped oil builds up within the gland, causing inflammation. The swelling within the oil gland can become so intense that the oil gland can rupture, causing further inflammation.
Acne is a common skin condition caused due to different conditions, obstructed sebaceous glands and sometimes deeper cysts or nodules that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms.
What are the Preparations:
There is no necessary preparation for acne laser therapy. However, it may be helpful to avoid direct sunlight buy using a high factor sun cream.
Usually a prescription medication is given that you can apply to your skin (topical medication) or take by mouth (oral medication). At Dr. Skin's clinic apart from medications we provide our patients with a few other options. We consult with our patients to discuss with them which treatment is best suited for them.
During the procedure
The treatment consists of a laser being flashed onto your acne. As it does this you may experience some slight discomfort but most people report that it is tolerable. If you want you can have local anaesthetic applied to your skin before the procedure is carried out to minimise the pain. Once the laser therapy is complete, your dark glasses will be removed and you will be given information about how to look after your skin as it recovers. You will also possibly discuss when you will need to return for further treatment.
After the procedure:
There is very little in the way of aftercare for laser therapy. This is one of its selling points. The single very important thing is to keep your skin away from sunlight for at least 24 hours after treatment. It is recommended that you wear a high factor sun cream every day to avoid the harmful effects of UV.
After treatment you may experience some swelling or reddening of the skin, which can cause irritation. Things like hot baths (and other steamy environments) swimming or intense exercise may make this worse. You can avoid this by steering clear of these things for the first 5 days after treatment.
